Stefan Sauerland | Germany

Stefan Sauerland joined IQWiG (Institute for Quality and Efficiency in Healthcare) in January 2010. As Head of the Department for Non-Pharmacological Treatments, he is responsible for the scientific evaluation of non-pharmacological therapies (including medical devices), diagnostic tests and control procedures. IQWiG is responsible for the preparation of evidence-based reports that support reimbursement decisions at national level within the German healthcare system. Prof. Sauerland has more than 12 years of experience in surgical research, first at the University of Cologne and then at the University of Witten/Herdecke. His main areas of interest have been clinical trials, clinical guidelines and meta-analyses. He has published more than 250 articles, more than 150 of which are in the Medline database. In 2005, he received the DKV Cochrane Award for his review of laparoscopic appendectomy for Cochrane. He obtained his MD from the University of Cologne and his M.P.H. from the University of Dusseldorf. In 2019, he became an assistant professor at the University of Cologne. top

Natalie Schellack | South Africa

Natalie Schellack jest zarejestrowaną farmaceutką, profesorem, ponadto aktualnie pełni funkcję Kierownik Wydziału Farmakologii na Uniwersytecie w Pretorii. Profesor Schellack zdobyła trzy tytuły naukowe: dwa tytuły licencjata (pielęgniarstwo i farmacja) oraz tytuł doktora farmacji. Poza uniwersytetem, profesor Schellack zasiada w Południowoafrykańskiej Radzie Aptekarskiej (jako mianowany członek rady) oraz w Ministerialnym Komitecie Doradczym ds. Odporności na Drobnoustroje (MAC-AMR). Jej zainteresowania badawcze skupiają się na szeroko rozumianej farmacji klinicznej związanej z pediatrią, ototoksycznością oraz chorobami zakaźnymi (w tym, między innymi, gruźlicą lub HIV). W bardziej szczegółowym ujęciu, jej zainteresowania obejmują dane dotyczące wykorzystania kwantyfikacji drobnoustrojów, farmakokinetyczne oraz dynamiczne poziomy antybiotyków we krwi. Obecnie jej obszar badawczy skupia się w większym stopniuj na znajdywaniu innowacyjnych sposobów pomiaru wykorzystania drobnoustrojów przy użyciu technologii medycznych. Profesor Schellack jest współzałożycielką Południowoafrykańskiego Towarzystwa Farmacji Klinicznej (SASOCP). W 2018 roku została nominowana w plebiscycie “Woman of stature” w RPA na kobietę roku w kategorii opieki zdrowotnej. Profesor Schellack ma ocenę C2 przyznaną, przez Narodową Fundację Badań Naukowych (NRF). Michael Schlander | Germany

Michael Schlander is Professor of Health Economics (at AWI – Alfred Weber Institute for Economics and at the Mannheim Medical Faculty) of the University of Heidelberg, currently on leave of absence to act as foundation Head of the Division of Health Economics for the German Cancer Research Center (Deutsches Krebsforschungszentrum, DKFZ), Heidelberg, Germany (since 2017). He has been founding chairman of the not-for-profit “Institute for Innovation & Valuation in Health Care” (InnoValHC e.V.) in Wiesbaden, Germany (since 2005), and has acted a scientific advisor of its consulting and management branch, Inno-Val-HC-Forschungsgesellschaft mbH (InnoValHC Research Inc., also since 2005).  He is a member of numerous scientific associations, including the Drug Information Association (DIA), the International Health Economics Association (iHEA), and the International Society for Pharmacoeconomics and Outcomes Research (ISPOR); in 2008, he was a co-founder of the German Society for Health Economics (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Gesundheitsökonomie, DGGÖ). He further acted as the scientific program chair for the 15th Annual European Congress of ISPOR in 2012, with more than 3,500 attendants. After six years in experimental brain research and clinical neurology (at the Universities of Frankfurt a.M. and Mainz), he joined the international biopharmaceutical industry in 1987, where he spent 15 years in executive roles in clinical development (1987-1993), marketing (1993-1999), and general management (1999-2002) in Belgium, Germany, Switzerland, and the United States. His scientific publications include two monographs, on ‘The Contribution of Health Economics to Market-Oriented Pharmaceutical Research and Development’ (Witten/Herdecke University Press; Witten, Germany: 1998) and on ‘Health Technology Assessments by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE)’ in England and Wales (Springer; New York, NY: 2007).  top

Holger Jens Schünemann | Canada / Italy

Holger is a tenured professor in the Departments of Health Research Methods, Evidence, and Impact and of Medicine at McMaster University with a part-time appointment at Humanitas University in Milan, Italy. From 2009 to 2019, he completed his two terms as Chair of Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics at McMaster University, widely considered the birthplace of evidence-based health care. He had trained in respiratory and exercise physiology and internal and respiratory medicine at the Medical School of Hannover and lung biology, epidemiology, internal medicine and preventive medicine/public health at the University at Buffalo (UB), State of New York. He was on faculty at UB and, from 2007 to 2009, interim Chair of Epidemiology at the National Cancer Institute in Rome, Italy. Since 2000, he helped reshaping of methodology for guideline development spanning clinical medicine to public health and contributed methodologically and practically to knowledge synthesis research, foremost through his co-leadership of the GRADE working group that he co-chairs. As author of over 800 peer-reviewed publications he is among the 500 most cited scientists globally and among the top 10 in medicine in Canada. He has been advisor and chair of many guideline expert groups for WHO, the European Commission, ministries of health, other governmental organizations and professional societies. He is director of Cochrane Canada and the McMaster GRADE center. Maintaining an active internal medicine practice fulfills his passion for patient care and ensures his research is people-oriented. top

Ad Schuurman | Netherlands

Head of Business Contact Centre and International Affairs of the Dutch National Health Care Institute (ZIN). President of the Medicines Evaluation Committee (MEDEV) Ad Schuurman completed his study in Utrecht as a clinical psychologist in 1980. He subsequently worked for five years as head of a patients’ association. In the following years, as staff officer of a regional Institute for Mental Health, he organized the cooperation the Regional Institutes for Mental Health and the other healthcare organisations. After spending several years as manager of the national project relating to pharmacy therapeutic decision making, he became head of a geriatric department. In the meantime he completed studies on management consultancy and on business administration (MBA). As deputy director of the Dutch College of General Practitioners (NHG), he set up the Electronic Prescription System. In recent years, as manager of the Pharmacy department, he was responsible for the pharmacy-related activities of the ZIN. Since 2006 he was head of the Reimbursement Department, covering all healthcare reimbursement issues in the Netherlands. In 2006 he became President of the Medicine Evaluation Committee (MEDEV) in Brussels, in which reimbursement authorities of 20 EU countries cooperate. Steven Simoens | Belgium

Steven Simoens currently is a full Professor of health economics at KU Leuven. Since 2013, he is the head of the unit Clinical Pharmacology and Pharmacotherapy in the Department of Pharmaceutical and Pharmacological Sciences at KU Leuven. His research interests focus on health economic aspects of medicinal products. Steven Simoens has carried out numerous cost of illness analyses, economic evaluations and budget impact analyses of medicinal products. He has also worked extensively in the area of policy relating to market access of medicinal products. Steven Simoens is a member of the management committee of the EU Framework Programme Horizon 2020 COST action on shortages of medicinal products. He is an Associate Editor of Frontiers in Pharmacology and of GaBI Journal. He is also a member of the Editorial Board of multiple peer-reviewed journals. Steven Simoens teaches pharmaco-economics and health economics courses at KU Leuven. Od 2008 r. należy do Międzynarodowego Konsorcjum Genetyki Udaru Mózgu – wchodzi w skład Komitetu Sterującego. Prowadzi badania genetycznych czynników ryzyka różnych etiologii udaru mózgu, publikowane m.in. w Nature Genetics, Lancet Neurology czy American Journal of Human Genetics. W 2013 r. prof. Agnieszka Słowik we współpracy z prof. Tadeuszem Popielą zorganizowała system leczenia przyczynowego udaru niedokrwiennego mózgu za pomocą trombektomii mechanicznej (CITO) skierowany do mieszkańców Małopolski. W ramach tego systemu leczenie zapewniono ponad 200 chorych. W 2018 r. prof. Agnieszka Słowik razem z prof. Tadeuszem Popielą otrzymali nagrodę Prezesa Rady Ministrów za zorganizowanie i koordynowanie tego systemu. top

She has been the head of the Department of Population Health Monitoring and Analysis at the National Institute of Public Health, NIH – National Research Institute since 2024. Sophie Söderholm Werkö | Sweden

Sophie has an MSc in Business Administration and a PhD from the University of Stockholm. An expert in healthcare management and healthcare system transformation, he is an economist and graduated from the Poznań University of Economics and Business. He has lectured at the Warsaw School of Economics, the Medical Center for Postgraduate Education, and the Leon Kozminski University. From 2008 to 2012, he served as Secretary of State in the Ministry of Health, where he oversaw, among other things, the National Health Fund. He co-authored key systemic solutions in healthcare, including the Act on Medical Activity, the Reimbursement Act, the Act on Patients' Rights and the Patient Ombudsman. He implemented a guaranteed benefits package and changes to the National Health Fund funding allocation algorithm. From 2005 to 2014, he was a Member of Parliament of the 5th, 6th, and 7th terms. During this time, he served on the parliamentary health and public finance committees. From 2012 to 2014, he served as Vice-Chairman of the Public Finance Committee. For 10 years, he held management positions in the private sector (in the health sector), where he was responsible for, among other things, project management, corporate management, and developing market entry and business strategies. By decision of the Minister of Health, on July 2, 2024, he was appointed Deputy President of the National Health Fund. top

Uzyskał tytuł doktora nauk o zdrowiu, na Wydziale Nauk o Zdrowiu Uniwersytetu Medycznego w Łodzi. Zastępca Dyrektora Departamentu Analiz i Strategii Centrali NFZ, wykładowca na Akademii Humanistyczno-Ekonomicznej w Łodzi. W latach 1987-2005 pracował i pełnił kierownicze funkcje w Państwowym Przedsiębiorstwie Zaopatrzenia Farmaceutycznego “Cefarm”. Od 2005 r. pracuje w Centrali Narodowego Funduszu Zdrowia. Autor i współautor ok. 40 artykułów publikowanych w krajowych i międzynarodowych pismach z zakresu medycyny i ekonomiki, mówiących o analizie danych medycznych, finansowaniu w systemie ochrony zdrowia, epidemiologii, farmakoekonomiki.
